Can Happy Head products be used with gray hair?

Our topical hair growth solution can be used with gray hair. The topical solution shouldn’t impact your hair color in any way, and your hair color shouldn’t interfere with the work the topical does for your hair. In very rare cases, the Retinoic Acid in the topical may make your scalp more sensitive to the sun.

Should I choose a topical, oral, or a combination of both?

Ultimately, it comes down to the recommendation from your Happy Head board-certified dermatologist. But generally, we recommend topical hair growth treatments for anyone looking to reduce their chance of experiencing any potential side effects. Topical hair growth treatments have lower systemic absorption. We’ve found that a combination of both topical and oral medications with the same high-potency active ingredients can help you achieve the best results over time.

What is topical Finasteride or Dutasteride for hair loss?

Topical Finasteride is a clinically-proven, modern, effective method of combating hair loss with possible lower side effects, according to clinical studies. Finasteride inhibits DHT (one of the main causes of hair loss) formation in the scalp, reversing the shrinking of hair follicles. Traditionally, patients would take oral Finasteride for hair loss. The oral version exposes the body to unnecessary systemic exposure to Finasteride. In contrast, topical Finasteride is applied and not ingested. Research shows that when compared to the tablet form of 1mg Finasteride, 0.1% topical Finasteride exhibits similar remedial effects. Hence, like oral preparation, topical Finasteride for hair loss works to reduce scalp and serum DHT levels, a higher amount of which is found in shrunken hair follicles. According to clinical studies, topical Finasteride may be a safer alternative to oral Finasteride since it is not ingested.

Does topical Finasteride and Dutasteride regrow hair?

Finasteride is indicated for female pattern hair loss, known as androgenetic alopecia. It is a 5AR inhibitor and prevents the formation of DHT. A clinical study by Hajheydari et al. (2009) has shown an increase in terminal hair count after several months of topical Finasteride use, demonstrating that topical Finasteride can cause hair to regrow and increase hair density.

How long does topical Finasteride, Dutasteride, or Spironolactone take to work?

Daily application of topical Finasteride, Dutasteride, or Spironolactone results are typically seen within 3 to 6 months of your first use.

What is oral Spironolactone for female hair loss?

Spironolactone is an FDA-approved medication used to treat high blood pressure and has been used off-label for treating female pattern hair loss as well as adult hormonal acne. It is a Testosterone blocker, preventing Testosterone-derived Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from attaching to its receptor. Oral Spironolactone is an alternative regrowth ingredient to Finasteride for women under 50. We include Spironolactone in our 3-in-1 SuperCapsule™ in combination with Minoxidil and Vitamin D3. Spironolactone can also be prescribed alone as an oral medication.

Spironolactone can be used simultaneously with other medications, such as birth control medications. Spironolactone is a diuretic, which means that it may help you make more urine. The most common side effects may include a change in blood pressure, such as dizziness or lightheadedness, breast tenderness, breast enlargement, irregular periods, or spotting between periods. Spironolactone may increase potassium levels in your body, so patients should avoid foods that are high in potassium, such as bananas, coconut water, or avocados. Patients should avoid pregnancy on this medication. Spironolactone is a prescription medication, so a medical consultation is required. How does Spironolactone work?

Spironolactone works to combat female pattern hair loss by competitively inhibiting the hormone Testosterone from binding to Testosterone receptors. Testosterone is the hormone responsible for hair thinning. Typically, Testosterone is converted into another hormone called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is responsible for shrinking hair follicles and causing thinning and baldness. Spironolactone competes with Testosterone to bind to the Testosterone receptors. By doing so, it prevents Testosterone from converting into DHT. By effectively reducing DHT levels, Spironolactone helps combat female pattern hair loss.
